Spiritually and Physically Fit!

Many Christians are spiritually fit but physically weak and sick. Fitness, nutrition, and health is our RESPONSIBILITY as stewards of the body God gave us. It is our duty to remain spiritually and physically fit for Christ.

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The verse above applies to all areas including fitness, nutrition, health, and all forms of abuse against the body (sexual, physical, alcohol, drugs, etc.).

It’s not about looking good or having six-pack abs. Although, form follows function and you will look better which will in turn make you feel better about yourself. Having a better self image and confidence are things you need as a Christian to give you the BOLDNESS, POWER and STRENGTH God has given us through the Holy Spirit. And good health means we can do what God has called us to do.

“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of POWER and love and DISCIPLINE.” – 2 Timothy 1:7

Discipline your body through proper exercise and nutrition. Let it fuel you and provide the POWER and STRENGTH you need to be BOLD in Christ and to honor and glorify Him while fulfilling the purpose He has for you! God should be your inspiration and motivation to get fit and healthy.

I have spent a large part of my life immersed in fitness and nutrition as an intense hobby and passion and never had a clue why until God revealed the reasons for it in 2009 when I lost my  job and started Underground Fitness Revolution. I can help you because it is God’s purpose for me. It’s the reason He created me. He gave me gifts, talents, and abilities to fulfill this purpose in my life yo!

My current goal is to become as spiritually fit as I am physically fit. And although I have many more years of physical fitness under my belt than I do as a Christian, God continues to grow me spiritually each and every day the more I follow in His footsteps, listen to what He is saying, and follow what it is He wants me to do.

“Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” – 1 Timothy 4:7-8

I’m asking you to commit 15-30 minutes a day to get fit, lose fat, and improve your health. If you cannot do that, nothing else will work for you. No gimmicks, pills, potions, or any other fad or easy fix! Just consistency and hard work.

It will take discipline, commitment, action, better habits, and a lifestyle change but it’s all to honor and glorify God in the end and do what we are responsible for doing as Christians and stewards of our bodies yo!

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do ALL to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

Your Body is a Temple!

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

You may have noticed the above bible verse in my web site banner. But have you looked it up or really thought about its meaning and how it pertains to your fitness, weight loss and health goals?

Let’s take a closer look at why your body is a temple of God, the importance of it and how to truly honor God and the body you’ve been given while meeting your fitness and health goals.

Your Body is a Temple

Our body does not belong to us. It belongs to God. He created us in His image (Genesis 1:27) and for His purpose. The Holy Spirit lives in us and is a gift from God. We are a steward of the body He gave us and it is our duty to take care of it and honor God with it. That is a profound statement that you may not have really caught. Read it again.

Being a steward means that we have been assigned as a “fiscal agent” or “manager” of the body God gave us to take care of it for Him. We are responsible for it.

Let’s take a look at it as an analogy. For those of you with teenage children, this will really hit home. For those without teenagers, you’ll still understand this if you own a vehicle so follow along closely.

Parents, let’s say you have a teenager who has just been given their driver’s license. They want to use your car. Now, before they drive your car, you’ll most likely give them a set of rules or guidelines of things you want them to do to make sure they drive safely, not injure themselves or others, or damage YOUR car.

Of course, they will agree to everything you say, but as soon as you hand them the keys and they pull out of the driveway, they start mashing the pedal to the metal and doing 120mph on the highway or driving like a bat out of hell! They slam on the brings, swerve in and out of traffic, load the car up with their friends who bring in food and drinks or, worse, smoke inside YOUR car.

Now, knowing that your teenager is defiling your car in such ways, how do you feel about that? Besides driving YOUR car hard and pounding on it and knowing it’s also being abused in various ways by your teen’s friends as well, does it make you angry? Do you get upset knowing that you work hard to own and maintain the car only to see it damaged when you get it back?

You know they didn’t follow all your rules or guidelines. Who does? I sure didn’t when my dad let me use his car when I had my driver’s license. I drove hard and fast and pushed it to its limits at times. I raced people on the streets or took back roads with big hills and drove fast so it felt like a roller coaster ride for me and my friends. I loaded it up with friends that spilled food or drinks inside. Or, worse, some buffalo wing sauce that got all over the seats, floors, headliner, windows, etc. (Thanks Shawn!) And I’ve even had friends get into fist fights inside my dad’s car while I laughed my butt off (Shawn and PJ). But I digress.

The reality is that it is YOUR car and someone else is doing things to it that you don’t like or appreciate and it doesn’t honor or obey what you instructed them to do when using it.

That’s exactly how it is with your body. God lets you use the body He has given you (you’re the teenager driving His car) and He asks you to honor and glorify Him through the use of it. When you put unhealthy food, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs and other toxic substances in your body, you are doing God a great dishonor and going against his commands. When you don’t exercise and keep yourself healthy and fit, you’re letting the maintenance go on the body you’ve been given and taking away years of good use to do God’s work.

Your body – just like your car if it’s not properly taken care of and regularly maintained – will break down from abuse and misuse. Not only will your body have physical damage from neglecting your health and fitness (similar to having dents, dings and accidents with your car), but it will have internal damage to your organs and how your body functions on a daily basis (just like the engine or the inside of the car – torn upholstery, cracked or broken pieces, damaged buttons, electronics, windows, etc.). Not to mention all the mental and emotional effects you experience as a result of being overweight, obese or having various diseases or other health, confidence and self-esteem issues.

Are you beginning to see the importance of taking care of your body not just for yourself but for God? If your body does not belong to you, and if God has a plan and purpose for you, how do you expect to do what He has planned if you continue doing things that tear your body down rather than build it up to keep it strong and healthy?

You Were Bought For a Price

This is a big one. We were bought for  price. God sent His only Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). ALL of them (Romans 5:19). The ones we’ve committed in the past and all the ones we will commit for the rest of our lives! Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for our sake (Romans 5:8). He took the punishment, the torture, the ridicule, the temptation and so much more so we could be  forgiven of our sins and have eternal life with Him (John 6:47).

Let’s look at this from another perspective. If you received a heart, liver or bone marrow transplant, would you do what the doctors instructed in order to take care of this life-saving organ? Yes, of course you would! Not only will the transplant save your life or help you overcome whatever health issues that caused the need of a new organ, but it will provide you with many more years of good health provided you do as instructed.

The price someone else paid to provide that vital life-giving organ was immense. They died to provide life to you! And because of that, you should not only be thankful and appreciative that you were the recipient of the organ, but you should do everything possible to care for the organ and your body to have many wonderful years to spend loving God, loving people and serving others.

How to Honor God with Your Body

Here are some simple tips to help you honor God with your body. Remember, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and you were bought for a price. Therefore, take these simple steps to fulfill your responsibilities as a steward, fiscal agent or manager of the body you’ve been given.

1.) Eat Healthy Food – Taking care of your body starts with providing healthful food and nutrients to keep you healthy. Good clean food will help you lose weight and remain healthy for years to come. Remember, 80 percent of your body comp goals are a direct result of the food you eat. That means eating plenty of lean protein, vegetables, fruit, healthy fats, clean water and other healthy food is the most important thing you can do.

Don’t load your body with toxic food including fast food, processed food, trans fats, sugar, flour-based products, fried food, cereal, bread, rice/grains, pasta, and other foods that mask themselves as being healthy when they are not. 2.) Exercise Regularly – Exercise is extremely important since we live such inactive lives compared to those in the past. Even more important is resistance training. Some form of resistance training is crucial to building and maintaining muscle and strength, increasing bone density, burning fat, boosting metabolism, improving sleep and energy and much, much more.

Resistance training is more important than aerobic training, as you can still build your cardiovascular system with a properly designed resistance training program. But cardio or aerobic training alone will NOT build or maintain muscle mass and it doesn’t boost your metabolism or increase bone density like resistance training. And don’t use time or money as an excuse! You can get a great workout in only a few minutes each day with a program such as The 10-Minute Trainer. Research has proven that a 10-minute workout can be more beneficial than a 30-minute workout provided the INTENSITY is high. 3.) Don’t Abuse Your Body – Whenever you eat poorly, don’t get enough sleep, don’t exercise regularly or bombard your body with various toxins such as alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and other substances, you are abusing your body. You are causing organs to work harder than needed or at much less efficiency to be strong and healthy. Not only that, but many of these substances dishonor God and your body. They cause many health issues, fat gain, diseases and more.

Remember, your body is a temple, and when you abuse it, you are destroying that temple for your own purposes and not for what God has planned. You don’t own your body. You were bought for a price.
